USEFUL LANGUAGE

e. Underline the adverbs of degree... What effect do they have on the adjectives?

Answer: totally increases the strength of the adjective and slightly reduces the strength of the verb.

f. Cross out adverbs...

  1. ok
  2. very should be crossed out. It can't be used with strong adjectives like fascinating, amazing, etc... 
  3. ok
  4. inceredibly and extremely should be crossed out. like very they can't be used with strong adjectives. they are used with normal adjectives as stronger intensifiers than very

It's a complaint about a meal in a restaurant. The xact problems were slow service, the fact that they wer asked to leave just after they had been brought the dessert, and the cost of the dishes the waiter recommended, which were not on the menu.

  4. b (formal fixed phrase)
  5. b (more formal adjective, more precise, less vague)

  7. a (use of passive is less confrontational)
  8. b (passive is les personal and confrontational)

  10. a (less agressive and demanding)
USEFUL LANGUAGE

PLANNING WHAT TO WRITE

The hotel that Hanna had booked was turning into a B & B, so there were noisy builders, a cold breakfast as the kitchen wasn't open, no room service or evening meal, and the manager wasn't available.
